Gorham Savings Bank is committed to providing a secure online environment for our Internet Banking customers. We know that security and confidentiality are two significant issues facing online banking and we want you, our customer, to feel safe when doing business with us via your computer. We have partnered with the leading Internet security companies using the latest technology to secure your online banking experience.
Enroll Process
Once we receive your enrollment form, our customer service representatives will set up your accounts for Internet access and then mail you a letter detailing your permanent User ID and your temporary password that has been randomly generated.
After receiving the initial letter from the Bank, you may now login to our Internet Banking System. The first time you login, you will be prompted to change your temporary password to a new password, personal and confidential to you. We require all passwords to be 8-10 letters and/or numbers long for security purposes; the longer the password, the harder it is for someone to guess it. You should not give your password out to anyone.
Three Strikes and You're Out
If there is ever an attempt to login to our Internet Banking System with your User ID that fails three times in a row, your account will be rendered unusable. Sometimes this happens if you forget your password or if you have the Caps Lock key on when typing your password. To reactivate your access, your need to call our Customer Service Center at 839-4796 or 1-800-492-8120. The purpose of this lockout is to keep someone else from trying to access your accounts by guessing your password.
Password Replacement
If you ever forget your password altogether, please contact our Customer Service Center at 839-4796 or 1-800-492-8120 to have a new, temporary password mailed to you at the address on your account. Once you receive the temporary password, you will need to login again like the first time, where you will be prompted to change your password to a confidential password, personal to you.
Secure Communications
Data is encrypted as it travels in packets from your PC to our web site and back again. The encryption standard we use is Secure Socket Layer, or SSL. Internet Banking users must use a browser which will support SSL (browser versions 5.0 or above) for maximum protection. GSB has chosen to use 128-bit encryption keys through SSL, which is one of the highest industry standards available today.
Secure Online Environment
All User IDs and passwords are stored on our bank's computer, which is physically separate from the Internet. A firewall is set up as a barrier between the Internet and our computer system. A firewall is a software and hardware system that defines, controls and limits the access that external computers have to the bank's network. All incoming data passes through the firewall, which verifies the source and destination of each packet of data. Our firewall records all activity within our Online Banking system, including sign-ons, sign-offs and access violations.
The last piece of security, called Digital ID, is provided by Verisign, an Internet security company. When a successful login is established, a public key and a private key are issued to both you and our web site file server. These keys allow the two computers to verify each other's identity for the duration of the online banking session. The keys expire on the two computers after each session and new keys are established for each subsequent session.
Most of our security features are behind the scenes. From a user perspective, all you need is a compatible browser and a valid, User ID and confidential password. Gorham Savings Bank and our Internet technology partners will take care of the rest.
